Masters hockey has continued to prosper across the Eastern region with Suffolk participating in the Men's Over 50 regional county tournament and the Men's Over 60 side involved in the National Over 60 competition.
The Over 50 squad, captained by Peter Blake (IES) won the pool competition in November which took them to the finals in Cambridge in March. Unfortunately they could not retain the trophy that they won in 2015, losing to Norfolk in a tightly fought final.
The Over 60 squad had the misfortune to be drawn against one of the favourites for the National Cup - Iceni Rex - in the first round of the up. A hard fought match saw Suffolk edged out 3-2 in a game that could have gone either way.
Removal from the Cup saw Suffolk go into the Plate competition and wins against Chelmsford (5-2), St Albans (w/o) and Norfolk (4-1) put Suffolk into the semi finals. In a home tie against Warwickshire and Worcestershire, Suffolk lost 1-0 to the team that went on to win the Plate competition. The squad, captained by Roger Girling (Ipswich) can be justifiably proud to have done so well.
The Ladies Over 40's side competed in the East regional tournament held at Culford and, like the Over 50 men's side, were unable to retain the trophy that they had won the previous year, losing out to Norfolk Ladies.
Four Suffolk men represented England in the European Championships at Southgate last August and four others played in the Tournament Trophy that ran in parallel with the Championships. Three players are currently in Australia playing in the 2016 World Cup. A number of Suffolk players have represented the East at various age levels.
Four Suffolk ladies played for England during the year, two at Over 45 and two at Over 50. In addition five Suffolk ladies have represented the East over the various Masters age groups .
